Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Meta TV Show To Date
Marvel is aware that audiences might be feeling some superhero fatigue, so they've opted to include that very idea into their next superhero series.
That's right, the debut trailer for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the MCU.
The trailer, which premiered on October 10th, also subtly moved the Wonder Man launch date later from its original late 2025 window into early 2026.
Why another superhero movie? Everyone is weary of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man resonated with me on a profound level. There is an opportunity to shock viewers. To reimagine the whole category of narrative.
The reporter responds: "Have you given any thought about the cast?"
The preview then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the conversation on his mobile device, and the preview concludes.
What We Know About Wonder Man
We already knew that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who transforms into a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).
The supporting cast includes Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's manager Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed coming back as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that Marvel intends to laugh at its own tropes.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is fully committed on self-referential comedy. Will that work without the star power of its previous leads? We'll have to wait and see.
